Union Settlement's Childcare Program provides one-sixth of all childcare services in East Harlem. We serve 500 children and their families in six childcare and Head Start centers and 100 school-age children in after-school programs at two sites.
Teachers in our pre-school program assist children ages two to five with learning in a stimulating social and educational environment. We operate a Universal Pre-Kindergarten program with Community School District 4/Region 9. In collaboration with our Youth Services Department, our after school-programs offer year-round educational and social activities for children ages 6 to 12, and features visual and performing arts projects, homework assistance and a full-day summer program.
Union Settlement's Family Childcare Network, now in its fifth year, responds to welfare reform by preparing community residents to establish and run their own home-based child care businesses. Our providers care for children ages two months to 12 years in an educationally stimulating home based setting. All sites and providers are licensed by the Department of Health and provide hot, nutritious meals to all participants.
