East Harlem HIV CARE Network::

East Harlem suffers from the city's second highest cumulative AIDS and living AIDS case rates. Each year, close to 200 community residents are diagnosed with HIV. To combat these conditions, Union Settlement is the lead agency for the East Harlem HIV CARE Network, a consortium of more than 35 service providers in the community seeking to improve the availability, accessibility, quality and coordination of services for people living with or affected by HIV and AIDS. Network initiatives include:

  • Training/workshops for on topics such as housing, case management strategies, treating special populations
  • Community forums on relevant issues
  • Annual East Harlem AIDS Walk & Health Fair
  • Participation in nationwide events such as National Testing Week and National Latino AIDS Awareness Day.
Organized in 1991, the Network is funded by the New York State Department of Health AIDS InstituteÍs Statewide AIDS Service Delivery Consortium. Other participants include the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the NYC AIDS Housing Network, the Association to Benefit Children, the Latino Commission on AIDS and the Mt. Sinai Adolescent Health Center.
