Volunteer ENewsletter March 2010

Volunteer E-Newsletter

Welcome to the first issue of our volunteer e-newsletter. We will continue to update you about volunteer opportunities, Union Settlement events and other news. Thank you for the important contributions that you make to support our work and for helping us create opportunities in the East Harlem community.

Updates and News:

Career Guidance
Two employees from Mizuho Bank volunteered to talk to an eager group of students from our College Readiness Program. The group learned about the banking/financial sector and tips for suceeding in college. Union Settlement is always open to setting up career presentations for our participants. If you are interested in giving up an hour or two to speak to students email us at volunteers@unionsett.org

Highlighted Opportunity:
Friendly Visiting Program

The Friendly Visitor Program is recruiting volunteers to visit homebound seniors in the East Harlem community. The program's mission is to provide contact, connection, and companionship to isolated homebound seniors. We need volunteers like you to bring warm friendly conversation to a senior for at least two hours, once a week. We make sure to match volunteers and seniors based on common interest and availability.

From the Executive Director
"Volunteers are crucial to the success of Union Settlement. From serving meals to seniors, to providing after-school tutoring to students, to helping teachers in our childcare classrooms, to being conversation partners for recent immigrants, to serving on our Board of Directors, scores of Union Settlement volunteers are working every day to help improve the East Harlem community. Volunteers contribute their energy, ideas, and professional expertise, and we are so grateful for the invaluable assistance that these generous and compassionate volunteers provide." -David Nocenti, Executive Director
