SNAP Benefits Alternatives

On Thursday 10/30, Governor Hochul signed an executive order declaring a State of Emergency in New York. This allows the State to authorize additional funds to address the emergency food crisis that is expected to hit this weekend when the federal shutdown turns off SNAP funds, with funds targeted to emergency food providers. Investments from this week total $106 million and include: $30 million in previously-budgeted funds released early to the HPNAP and Nourish NY programs, $11 million to deploy Empire State Service Corps and SUNY Corps Members to support local food banks, and $65 million in new funds for HPNAP and Nourish NY. Given the new infusion of funds, some of you with HPNAP and Nourish contracts might see an increase. You can ask your contract managers, and if we get more detail, we will let you know.

Mayor Adams also announced yesterday that the city is investing an extra $15 million into the Community Food Connection Program.

This afternoon, a federal judge in Rhode Island ordered the Trump Administration to pay SNAP benefits during the shutdown. We do not yet know if they will comply.
